CollectJun 9, 2024

WDTPRS – 3rd Sunday after Pentecost: “As soldiers, traveling through enemy territory…” (NO and VO comparison)

Protector in te sperantium, Deus, sine quo nihil est validum, nihil sanctum: multiplica super nos misericordiam tuam; ut, te rectore, te duce, sic transeamus per bona temporalia, ut non amittamus aeterna.
Literal rendering

O God, protector of those hoping in You, without whom nothing is efficacious, nothing holy, multiply Your mercy upon us, so that, You being our guide and leader, we may pass through temporal goods in such a way that we do not lose the eternal.

In the older, traditional calendar of the Roman Rite, today is the 3rd Sunday after Pentecost. This is a yummy oration. Let’s have a taste. There is a pleasant alliteration in lines 2-3 of the collect. We can find a pair of pairs: nihil validum, nihil sanctum and some great ablative absolutes te rectore, te duce.

Commentary for this day

CollectJun 29, 2021

WDTPRS – Sts Peter & Paul – Collect (2002MR): “holy and venerable joy”

Deus, qui huius diei venerandam sanctamque laetitiam in apostolorum Petri et Pauli sollemnitate tribuisti, da Ecclesiae tuae eorum in omnibus sequi praeceptum, per quos religionis sumpsit exordium.

The Collect for the Novus Ordo of the Mass forf the Solemnity of Sts Peter and Paul is in part inspired by that of the parallel prayer in the 1962 Missale Romanum. It a new creation, though not entirely new. The last part, “eorum in omnibus sequi praeceptum, per quos religionis sumpsit exordium” is in the 1962MR Collect. The first…

28 June – Vigil of Sts. Peter and Paul: Firm upon the Rock of Apostolic Faith

Præsta, quaesumus, omnípotens Deus: ut nullis nos permíttas perturbatiónibus cóncuti; quos in apostólicæ confessiónis petra solidásti.

During this Fortnight For Freedom we observe (not celebrate!) the Vigil of the Feast of Sts. Peter and Paul. Vigils in the liturgical calendar are not just reminders that tomorrow is a feast. They are also reminders to prepare for the feast! We do penance. We especially do penance because of the horrid recent SCOTUS decisions which undermine religious liberty.

CollectJun 27, 2026

WDTPRS – Collect of the 13th Ordinary Sunday (Novus Ordo): the sticky goo of error and the freeing splendor of the truth. Wherein Fr. Z rants.

Deus, qui, per adoptionem gratiae, lucis nos esse filios voluisti, praesta, quaesumus, ut errorum non involvamur tenebris, sed in splendore veritatis semper maneamus conspicui.
Literal rendering

O God, who willed us, through the adoption of grace, to be children of light, grant, we beg, that we may not be wrapped up in the shadows of errors, but that we may remain always conspicuous in the splendor of truth.

At work in the Collect for the 13th Sunday of Ordinary Time are themes of divine adoption, the liberation of the children of God, the peril of error, and the splendor of Truth. Here is the Collect: O God, who willed us, through the adoption of grace, to be children of light, grant, we beg, that we may not be…

13th Sunday of Ordinary Time: SUPER OBLATA (1)

O God, who graciously produce the effects of your sacraments, grant, we beseech Thee, that our servitude may be made well-suited for these sacrificial gifts.

What Does the Prayer Really Say? 13th Sunday in Ordinary Time ORIGINALLY PRINTED IN The Wanderer in 2002 I am sure all of you were riveted either to the TV or the computer display watching the live transmission of the US bishops’ meeting in Dallas. The event is too recent for me to express calmly what I thought of it.…
