St. John the Baptist: notes and oldie PODCAzT

Sollemnitas Nativitatis sancti Ioannis Baptistae, Praecursoris Domini, qui iam in utero matris, Spiritu Sancto repletae, exsultavit gaudio ad humanae salutis adventum cuiusque ipsa nativitas Dominum Christum prophetavit; et tanta gratia refulsit in eo, ut ipse Dominus de illo diceret neminem maiorem inter natos mulierum Ioanne Baptistae.
Literal rendering

O God, who raised up blessed John the Baptist, so that he would prepare a perfect people for Christ the Lord, grant to your peoples the grace of spiritual joys and guide the minds of all the faithful into the way of salvation and peace.

Today is the Feast of the one whom the Lord called the greatest man ever born of woman. Here is his entry in the 2005 Martyrologium Romanum: I’ll let you readers provide your own perfect versions. CollectJun 9, 2024

WDTPRS – 3rd Sunday after Pentecost: “As soldiers, traveling through enemy territory…” (NO and VO comparison)

Protector in te sperantium, Deus, sine quo nihil est validum, nihil sanctum: multiplica super nos misericordiam tuam; ut, te rectore, te duce, sic transeamus per bona temporalia, ut non amittamus aeterna.
Literal rendering

O God, protector of those hoping in You, without whom nothing is efficacious, nothing holy, multiply Your mercy upon us, so that, You being our guide and leader, we may pass through temporal goods in such a way that we do not lose the eternal.

In the older, traditional calendar of the Roman Rite, today is the 3rd Sunday after Pentecost. This is a yummy oration. Let’s have a taste. There is a pleasant alliteration in lines 2-3 of the collect. We can find a pair of pairs: nihil validum, nihil sanctum and some great ablative absolutes te rectore, te duce.

24 June: St. John the Baptist

Deus, qui praesentem diem honorabilem nobis in beati Ioannis nativitate fecisti: da populis tuis spiritualium gratiam gaudiorum; et omnium fidelium mentes dirige in viam salutis aeternae.
Literal rendering

From 11th Sunday of Ordinary Time

On weekdays without their own proper, the Mass takes the Sunday’s prayers.

CollectJun 16, 2018

WDTPRS: 11th Ordinary Sunday – ‘firmness’ and ‘infirmity, ‘intention’ and ‘action’

Deus, in te sperantium fortitudo, invocantibus nostris adesto propitius, et, quia sine te nihil potest mortalis infirmitas, gratiae tuae praesta semper auxilium, ut, in exsequendis mandatis tuis, et voluntate tibi et actione placeamus.
Literal rendering

O God, strength of those hoping in You, graciously be present to us as we are invoking You, and, because without You mortal weakness can do nothing, grant always the help of Your grace, so that, in the performance of Your commands, we may please You both in will and in action.

This week’s Collect is pretty much the same as one in the ancient Gelasian Sacramentary and the prayer in the 1962 Missale Romanum used during the week after Trinity Sunday. Because of the word pairings fortitudo and infirmitas, voluntas and actio, a possible source for this Collect could be the anti-Pelagian writings of St. Augustine of Hippo (+430).
