Literal rendering

Almighty everlasting God, grant us an increase of faith, hope and charity, and cause us to love what You command so that we may merit to obtain what You promise.

Today’s Collect for the 13th Sunday after Pentecost in the Vetus Ordo survived the redactors to live on in the Novus Ordo as the Collect for the 30th Sunday of Ordinary Time. It is an ancient prayer, found in the Veronese and the Gelasian Sacramentary.

Prayer over the OfferingsSep 11, 2011

WDTPRS – SECRET 13th Sunday after Pentecost: a fearful puzzle

Literal rendering

O God, who have prepared unseen goods for those loving You, pour into our hearts the disposition of Your love, so that we, loving you in all things and above all things, may attain Your promises, which surpass every desire.

The Collect for the 20th Ordinary Sunday, found also in the 8th century Gelasian Sacramentary, is in the 1962 Missale Romanum for the 5th Sunday after Pentecost. Our prayer has many different words for love and longing: diligo, amor, affectus and the related cor, desiderium, promissio. Affectus means “a state of body, and especially of mind produced in one by…

20th Sunday of Ordinary Time: SUPER OBLATA (2)

Suscipe, Domine, munera nostra, quibus exercentur commercia gloriosa, ut, offerentes quae dedisti, te ipsum mereamur accipere.
Literal rendering

Catch up our gifts, O Lord, by which glorious transforming exchanges are given impetus, so that we who are offering what you have given may merit to be recipients of You Yourself.

What Does the Prayer Really Say? 20th Sunday of Ordinary Time ORIGINALLY PRINTED IN The Wanderer in 2006 His Excellency Arthur Roche, Bishop of Leeds and chairman of the new and improved ICEL, wrote a piece for The Tablet (5 August) describing the status quaestionis.
