Sollemnitas Nativitatis sancti Ioannis Baptistae, Praecursoris Domini, qui iam in utero matris, Spiritu Sancto repletae, exsultavit gaudio ad humanae salutis adventum cuiusque ipsa nativitas Dominum Christum prophetavit; et tanta gratia refulsit in eo, ut ipse Dominus de illo diceret neminem maiorem inter natos mulierum Ioanne Baptistae.
Literal rendering

O God, who raised up blessed John the Baptist, so that he would prepare a perfect people for Christ the Lord, grant to your peoples the grace of spiritual joys and guide the minds of all the faithful into the way of salvation and peace.

From 4th Sunday after Pentecost

On weekdays without their own proper, the Mass takes the Sunday’s prayers.

CollectJul 2, 2022

WDTPRS – 4th Sunday after Pentecost: What is “devotion?

Da nobis, quaesumus, Domine, ut et mundi cursus pacifico nobis tuo ordine dirigatur: et Ecclesia tua tranquilla devotione laetetur.

Sunday’s prayer is found in ancient sacramentaries, such as the Veronese and the “Hadrian” version of the Gregorian, and the so-called Gelasian. It is unchanged in the “Tridentine” form of the Missale Romanum as my trusty copy of the 1570MR shows. It survived the Consilium’s slicers and gluers who pasted together the Novus Ordo as the Collect for the 8th…

O God, who raised up blessed John the Baptist, so that he would prepare a perfect people for Christ the Lord, grant to your peoples the grace of spiritual joys and guide the minds of all the faithful into the way of salvation and peace.

From 12th Sunday of Ordinary Time

On weekdays without their own proper, the Mass takes the Sunday’s prayers.

CollectJun 20, 2026

WDTPRS – The Collect for the 12th Ordinary Sunday (Novus Ordo): His Name and Holy Fear, Holy Consolation

Sancti nominis tui, Domine, timorem pariter et amorem fac nos habere perpetuum, quia numquam tua gubernatione destituis, quos in soliditate tuae dilectionis instituis.
Literal rendering

Of Your Holy Name, O Lord, empower us to possess both a perpetual fear and, in no way less, a love: because You never deprive of Your guidance those whom You ground in the solidity of Your love.

This coming Sunday’s Collect is wonderful to sing! It is stark and lavish, carefully balanced, quintessentially Roman. This week’s Collect, also in 1962 Missale Romanum for the 2nd Sunday after Pentecost, was in the ancient Gelasian Sacramentary for the Sunday after the Ascension (Thursday). It is also prayed after the Litany of the Most Holy Name of Jesus.

12th Sunday of Ordinary Time: SUPER OBLATA (2)

Suscipe, Domine, sacrificium placationis et laudis, et praesta, ut, huius operatione mundati, beneplacitum tibi nostrae mentis offeramus affectum.
Literal rendering

Accept, O Lord, the sacrifice of placation and praise, and grant that we, having been cleansed by the religious work of this sacrificial act of offering, may offer you the well-pleasing affection of our minds.

What Does the Prayer Really Say? 12th Sunday of Ordinary Time ORIGINALLY PRINTED IN The Wanderer in 2006 The long time reader of these columns and now frequent participant on the WDTPRS internet blog, our friend HE, wrote to a bishop about liturgical translations and received a response (edited) which he shared: “Thank you for your letter of May 19,…
