Commemoration of St. Mark, Pope and Confessor

From 19th Sunday after Pentecost

On weekdays without their own proper, the Mass takes the Sunday’s prayers.

CollectOct 14, 2022

DIEBUS SALTEM DOMINICIS – 19th Sunday after Pentecost: You might not have a tomorrow.

Indue me, Domine, novum hominem, qui secundum Deum creatus est in iustitia et sanctitate veritatis. Amen.

When this Sunday comes around, with its snappy Collect, I am minded of the early 4th c. martyr St. Expeditus. Here is the Latin and my own slavishly literal version. You spotted “expediti” of course, in this prayers clearly military language. This is from expedio, “to extricate, disengage, let loose, free up from impediments, liberate any thing entangled.” When applied…

WDTPRS Collect 19th Sunday after Pentecost- “Why did God make you?”

Omnipotens et misericors Deus, universa nobis adversantia propitiatus exclude: ut mente et corpore pariter expediti, quae tua sunt, liberis mentibus exsequamur.
Literal rendering

Almighty and merciful God, having been appeased, keep away all things opposing us, so that, having been unencumbered in mind and body equally, we may with free minds accomplish the things which You command.

The snippers and stitchers of the Consilium allowed this Sunday’s prayer to survive unscathed in the post-Conciliar editions of the Missale Romanum. The Collect still echoes the ancient sentiments of Holy Church wherever the Roman Rite’s Ordinary Use of Holy Mass is offered in Latin on the 32nd Sunday of Ordinary Time.

WDTPRS 19th Sunday after Pentecost: SECRET – saving and healing

Haec munera quaesumus, Domine, quæ oculis tuae maiestatis offerimus, salutaria nobis esse concede.
Literal rendering

We beseech You, O Lord, grant that these gifts which we are offering in the sight of Your majesty, are for us saving things. SMOOTHER:

Today’s Secret for the 19th Sunday after Pentecost was in ancient versions of the Gelasian Sacramentary, such as the 8th c. Gellonensis. I don’t think it survived the scissors of the Consilium, wielded by Fr. Bugnini’s liturgical experts. In prayers which stress propitiation we will often have looking words or imagery. For example, we get orations with the gentle imperative…

From 27th Sunday of Ordinary Time

On weekdays without their own proper, the Mass takes the Sunday’s prayers.

CollectOct 1, 2022

WDTPRS 27th Ordinary Sunday: Of ashes, soap and you.

Omnipotens sempiterne Deus, qui abundantia pietatis tuae et merita supplicum excedis et vota, effunde super nos misericordiam tuam, ut dimittas quae conscientia metuit, et adicias quod oratio non praesumit.
Literal rendering

Almighty and everlasting God, who in the abundance of Your goodness surpass both the merits and the prayerful vows of suppliants, pour forth Your mercy upon us, so that You set aside those things which our conscience fears, and apply what our prayer dares not.

When we pray with the right attitude, particularly when kneeling before the altar of Sacrifice, joined in heart and mind with our mediator, the priest, Christ Himself makes up for what we are incapable of accomplishing on our own. St. Augustine (+430) says that Jesus

27th Sunday of Ordinary Time: POST COMMUNION

Concede nobis, omnipotens Deus, ut de perceptis sacramentis inebriemur atque pascamur, quatenus in id quod sumimus transeamus.
Literal rendering

Grant to us, Almighty God, that we may be inebriated and fed upon the sacramental mysteries that have been grasped to the extent that we pass over into that which we consume.
