WDTPRS: Collect 4th Sunday of Advent (Vetus Ordo) – “What our sins are obstructing”.

Excita, quaesumus, Domine, potentiam tuam, et veni: et magna nobis virtute succurre; ut, per auxilium gratiae tuae, quod nostra peccata praepediunt, indulgentia tuae propitiationis acceleret.
Literal rendering

Rouse up Your power, O Lord, we beseech You, and come: and hasten to aid us with your great might, so that, through the help of Your grace, what our sins are hindering the indulgence of Your merciful favor may make swift.

This prayer was in the ancient Gelasian Sacramentary and other sacramentaries. It survived in edited form in the Novus Ordo on Thursday of the 1st week of Advent. Praepedio means “to entangle the feet or other parts of the body; to shackle, bind, fetter”, and therefore “to hinder, obstruct, impede”. Something is placed “before” (prae) the “foot” (pes), which makes…

WDTPRS – 21 December – O Oriens: “O dawn of the East”

O Oriens, splendor lucis aeternae, et sol iustitiae: veni, et illumina sedentes in tenebris et umbra mortis.

We continue our look at the O Antiphons. ENGLISH: O dawn of the east, brightness of light eternal, and sun of justice: come, and enlighten those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death. The shedding of light frees us from darkness. Again, the subtle note of liberation, deliverance.

WDTPRS: Last Days of Advent: 21 December – “majesty which transforms us”

Preces populi tui, quaesumus, Domine, clementer exaudi, ut, qui de Unigeniti tui in nostra carne adventu laetantur, cum venerit in sua maiestate, aeternae vitae praemium consequantur.
Literal rendering

Graciously hear the prayers of Your people, we beseech You, O Lord, so that those who are rejoicing about the Coming of Your Only-Begotten in our flesh, may attain the reward of eternal life when He will have come in His majesty.

Here is the Collect for 21 December. Remember, that in the Novus Ordo, the Last Days of Advent, from 17-24 December, shift in focus in the Collects to images of light and glory, moving the listener to attend to the great mystery about to be celebrated. The prayers are in substance from the ancient Rotulus of Ravenna.

WDTPRS – 4th Sunday of Advent: “Crede ut intellegas! Believe that you may understand!”

Gratiam tuam, quaesumus Domine, mentibus nostris infunde, ut qui, Angelo nuntiante, Christi Filii tui incarnationem cognovimus, per passionem eius et crucem ad resurrectionis gloriam perducamur.
Literal rendering

We beg You, O Lord, pour Your grace into our minds and hearts, so that we who came to know the incarnation of Christ Your Son in the moment the Angel was heralding the news, may be guided through His Passion and Cross to the glory of the resurrection.

Let’s view the Collect in the Novus Ordo for the 4th Sunday of Advent, which is also the Post Communion for the Feast of the Annunciation (25 March) in the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite (1962MR). The Annunciation was the moment of the Incarnation of our Lord.

WDTPRS – 4th Sunday of Advent (2002MR)

Sumpto pignore redemptionis aeternae, quaesumus, omnipotens Deus, ut quanto magis dies salutiferae festivitatis accedit, tanto devotius proficiamus ad Filii tui digne nativitatis mysterium celebrandum.
Literal rendering

We beg You, O Lord, pour Your grace into our minds and hearts, so that we who came to know the incarnation of Christ Your Son in the moment the Angel was heralding the news, may be guided through His Passion and Cross to the glory of the resurrection. Carefully note that Angelo nuntiante is an ablative absolute, hard to render in English without using a paraphrase. The participle nuntiante is in the present tense, or better, in a tense “contemporary” with the time of the verb cognovimus having a past tense. Thus, in the very moment the Angel was heralding the good news, we (collectively in the shepherds) knew about how God the Son Eternal took our whole human…

Today’s Collect is the Post-communion of the Feast of the Annunciation (25 March) in the 1962MR. Most of you who recite the Angelus know this prayer. This time we also get the WDTPRS version since we want to know what the prayer really says. This is also the prayer said traditionally after the Alma Redemptoris Mater, sung following Compline during…

4th Sunday of Advent: SUPER OBLATA (2)

Altari tuo, Domine, superposita munera Spiritus ille sanctificet, qui beatae Mariae viscera sua virtute replevit.

4th Sunday of Advent: POST COMMUNION (2)

Da nobis, quaesumus, Domine, Unigeniti Filii tui recensita nativitate vegetari, cuius caelesti mysterio pascimur et potamur.
Literal rendering

Now that the pledge of eternal redemption has been consumed, we beg, almighty God, that by however so much more the day of the saving festivity is approaching, by that same degree we may more devoutly make progress toward celebrating worthily the mystery of the nativity of your Son.
