WDTPRS: Septuagesima Sunday

Preces populi tui, quaesumus, Domine, clementer exaudi: ut, qui iuste pro peccatis nostris affligimur, pro tui nominis gloria misericorditer liberemur.
Literal rendering

We beseech You, O Lord, graciously to hark to the prayers of Your people: so that we who for our sins are justly afflicted, may for the glory of Your Name mercifully be freed.

The Collect of the Mass for Septuagesima Sunday is bracing. It has a different feel than many of our Sunday orations. Bl. Ildefonso Schuster observes, that this prayer St. Gregory, son of a senator and at 30 years of age Prefect of Rome, was the first Pope from a monastic background. It was a time of upheaval, plague and famine.…

WDTPRS: Septuagesima

Fideles tui, Deus, per tua dona firmentur: ut éadem et percipiendo requirant, et quaerendo sine fine percipiant. Glorious.
Literal rendering

We beseech You, O Lord, graciously to hark to the prayers of Your people: so that we who are justly afflicted for our sins, may mercifully be freed for the glory of Your Name. The first thing long time readers of this column will note, as well as you who attend mainly the Novus Ordo, is the profoundly different tone of this prayer. It is just as succinct as most ancient Roman prayers. It has the classic structure. But the focus on our responsibility and guilt for our sins is very alien to the style of the Novus Ordo. For the most part, such direct references to our sinful state were systematically excised from the ancient prayers which survived in…

For the Collect in Sunday’s Ordinary Form, 7th Sunday of Ordinary Time, here. The prayers and readings for the Masses of these pre-Lenten Sundays were compiled by St. Gregory the Great (+604), Pope in a time of great turmoil and suffering. Pre-Lent is particularly a time for preaching about missions and missionary work, the evangelization of peoples. In the Novus…

28 January: St. Thomas Aquinas, Priest and Doctor

Deus, qui beatum Thomam sanctitatis zelo ac sacrae doctrinae studio conspicuum effecisti, da nobis, quaesumus, et quae docuit intellectu conspicere, et quae gessit imitatione complere.

O God, who made blessed Thomas outstanding in zeal for holiness and diligent in application to sacred doctrine, grant to us, we beg You, both to fix our eyes by our intellect carefully on the things which he taught, and also to fulfill by our imitation the things which he accomplished in action.

CollectJan 24, 2021

WDTPRS: 3rd Ordinary Sunday – Which is it? “unity and peace” or “abound with good works”?

Omnipotens sempiterne Deus, dirige actus nostros in beneplacito tuo, ut in nomine dilecti Filii tui mereamur bonis operibus abundare.

Almighty eternal God, direct our actions in your gracious purpose, so that in the name of Thy beloved Son, we may merit to abound with good works.
