WDTPRS 3rd Sunday of Lent (1962MR): “When the priest’s hand extends over you, you are sheltered from the attacks of Hell.”

Quaesumus, omnipotens Deus, vota humilium respice: atque ad defensionem nostram, dexteram tuae maiestatis extende.
Literal rendering

We beseech You, God Almighty, regard with solicitude the prayers of the humble: and extend the right hand of Your majesty unto our defense. As I hear of the mighty “right hand of God’s majesty”, I remember that soon, during Good Friday, both Christ’s hands will be pierced with nails for my sins. He who is God became humbler than the humble creatures He fashioned in His likeness and, leaving Himself no defense, gave us His eternal freedom from the Enemy.

In ancient Rome on this 3rd Sunday, catechumens who desired to enter Holy Church and be baptized at Easter would be lead in a great procession to the Basilica of St. Lawrence “outside-the-walls” where they had been on Septuagesima Sunday. They would be “scrutinized”, tested.

WDTPRS Wednesday 3rd Week of Lent: a polishing not a torture

Praesta, quaesumus, Domine, ut, per quadragesimalem observantiam eruditi et tuo verbo nutriti, sancta continentia tibi simus toto corde devoti, et in oratione tua semper efficiamur concordes.
Literal rendering

Grant, we beg You, O Lord, that we, having been polished by means of the Lenten observance and nourished by Your word, may by holy continence be consecrated with our whole heart, and we may be made always harmonious in Your prayer.

COLLECT Praesta, quaesumus, Domine, ut, per quadragesimalem observantiam eruditi et tuo verbo nutriti, sancta continentia tibi simus toto corde devoti, et in oratione tua semper efficiamur concordes. A bit strange in its style, no? Well, this is of new composition for the Novus Ordo. It takes some inspiration from Sermon 40, 4 of St. Pope Leo I “the Great” (+461).

WDTPRS – 3rd Sunday of Lent (2002MR): Two wings of prayer

Literal rendering

O God, author of all acts of mercy and all goodness, who in fasts, prayers, and acts of almsgiving indicated the remedies of sins, look propitiously on this testimony of our humility, so that we who are being humbled in our conscience may always be consoled by your mercy.

Almsgiving, Fasting, Abstinence, Mortification Roman Station: St. Lawrence outside the walls An examination of our conscience is a humbling experience. When we look to see who really are inside, we can have different reactions. Sometimes we find things which frighten and discourage us. If we are weak in our habits and our faith, that inveterate enemy of ours souls, the…

WDTPRS 3rd Sunday of Lent – Prayer over the people (2002MR)

ORATIO SUPER POPULUM (2002MR): Rege, Domine, quaesumus, tuorum corda fidelium, et servis tuis hanc gratiam largire propitius, ut in tui et proximi dilectione manentes plenitudinem mandatorum tuorum adimpleant.
Literal rendering

Direct, O Lord, we beg, the hearts of your faithful, and propitiously grant this grace to your servants, that, remaining in the love of you and neighbor, they may bring to fulfillment the fullness of your commandments.

Historically, this was the Sunday in the ancient Church when, in Rome, catechumens underwent examinations. They would come in their penitential garments in a procession across the City to be "grilled" as it were near the tomb of this famous martyr. There were exorcisms at this time as the catechumens began their series of "scrutinies" before baptism at Easter.

3rd Sunday of Lent: POST COMMUNIONEM

Sumentes pignus caelestis arcani, et in terra positi iam superno pane satiati, te, Domine, supplices deprecamur, ut, quod in nobis mysterio geritur, opere impleatur.
Literal rendering

Taking the down payment of the sacred heavenly mystery, and, placed on earth, having been filled already with bread from on high, we kneeling in entreaty beseech you, O Lord, that, what is being accomplished in us by the sacramental mystery, may be brought to fulfillment by work.

His sacrificiis, Domine, concede placatus, ut, qui propriis oramus absolvi delictis, fraterna dimittere studeamus.

Having been appeased by means of these sacrifices, O Lord, grant that we who pray to be absolved from our own sins may be diligent in forgiving the transgressions of our brothers and sisters.
