WDTPRS Thursday 5th Week Lent (Prayer over the People): of spewing, pointless running, and the virtue of religion

ORATIO SUPER POPULUM: Esto, quaesumus, Domine, propitius plebi tuae, ut, de die in diem, quae tibi non placent respuens, tuorum potius repleatur delectionibus mandatorum.
Literal rendering

O Lord, we beseech You, be propitious toward Your people, that, from day to day, spewing out what is not pleasing to You, it (the people) may rather be filled with the delights of your mandates.

Please use the sharing buttons! Today’s “Prayer over the people”, at the end of Mass in the Ordinary Form, was originally in a truncated form in various manuscripts of the Gelasian Sacramentary. WDTPRS Thursday in the 5th Week of Lent: Defending the Faith

Adesto, Domine, supplicibus tuis, et spem suam in tua misericordia collocantes tuere propitius, ut, a peccatorum labe mundati, in sancta conversatione permaneant, et promissionis tuae perficiantur haeredes.
Literal rendering

Be present, O Lord, to Your humble petitioners, and graciously protect those placing their hope in Your mercy, so that, cleansed from the stain of sins, they may persevere to the end in holy manner of living and as the heirs of Your promise be brought to perfection.

This prayer was not in a pre-Conciliar edition of the Missale Romanum, but a prayer from the Veronese Sacramentary in the month of September, a fast time, it was altered by the Cutters and Pasters, for the Novus Ordo. The Veronese has et consequentes sufficientiam temporalem promissionis tuae perficiantur heredes.

WDTPRS – 5th Sunday of Lent: The Church, liturgically dying

Quaesumus, Domine Deus noster, ut in illa caritate, qua Filius tuus diligens mundum morti se tradidit, inveniamur ipsi, te opitulante, alacriter ambulantes.
Literal rendering

O Lord our God, we beg that, You assisting us, we ourselves may be found walking swiftly in that selfsame sacrificial love by which Your Son, loving the world, handed Himself over to death.

Traditionally this upcoming Sunday is called First Passion Sunday or First Sunday of the Passion. “Passiontide” begins. It is also known as Iudica Sunday, from the first word of the Introit of Mass (from Ps 42/41), and sometimes Repus (from repositus analogous to absconditus, “hidden”) because crosses and other images in churches are to be veiled. From today, in the…
