Vigil of Ascension Thursday

Deus, cuius Filus hodie in caelos, Apostolis astantibus, ascendit, concede nobis, quaesumus, ut secundum eius promissionem et ille nobiscum semper in terris et nos cum eo in caelo vivere mereamur.
Literal rendering

O God, whose Son today ascended into the heavens as the Apostles were standing close by, grant us, we beseech You, that, according to His promise, we may be worthy both that He lives with us on earth, and that we live with Him in heaven.

Here is something I wrote a loooong time ago – 2006 – for an WDTPRS article in the print version of The Wanderer. I had a column there for 11 years. …(I)n some places the Feast of the Ascension, which falls always on a Thursday, has been transferred to this Sunday. That would make it “Ascension Thursday Sunday”, I suppose.

From 5th Sunday after Easter

On weekdays without their own proper, the Mass takes the Sunday’s prayers.

CollectMay 10, 2026

WDTPRS – 5th Sunday after Easter (V.O.): Liturgical goop. Wherein Fr. Z rants.

Deus, a quo bona cuncta procedunt, largire supplicibus tuis: ut cogitemus, te inspirante, quae recta sunt; et, te gubernante, eadem faciamus.
Literal rendering

O God, from whom all good things issue forth, bountifully grant to Your supplicants, that, You inspiring, we may think things which are right, and, You guiding, we may accomplish the same.

I am going to drag you – again – through my standard and sustained rant about liturgy, punctuated by Latin vocabulary and Neoplatonism. Consider this a different sort of “food post”. I will apply what I rant about to the Collect for this Sunday’s Mass. Hang on for the ride.

From 6th Sunday of Easter

On weekdays without their own proper, the Mass takes the Sunday’s prayers.

CollectApr 30, 2016

WDTPRS – 6th Sunday of Easter (OF): We are risen, rising, and about to rise all at the same time

Fac nos, omnipotens Deus, hos laetitiae dies, quos in honorem Domini resurgentis exsequimur, affectu sedulo celebrare, ut quod recordatione percurrimus semper in opere teneamus.
Literal rendering

Almighty God, cause us to celebrate these days of joy, which we are carrying out in honor of the rising Lord with zealous affection, so that we may grasp in deed what we are traversing in remembrance.

Here is this week’s Collect, for the 6th Sunday of Easter in the Ordinary Form: This is glued together from bits and pieces gleaned from prayers in the ancient Veronese and Gelasian Sacramentary. Affectus means “a state or disposition of mind, mood” or “affection” in the sense of “love, desire, fondness” etc. Sedulus, is “busy, diligent, careful”. There is also…

Omnipotens sempiterne Deus, qui ad aeternam vitam in Christi resurrectione nos reparas, fructum in nobis paschalis multiplica sacramenti, et fortitudinem cibi salutaris nostris infunde pectoribus.
Literal rendering

Almighty and everlasting God, who in the resurrection of Christ restore us unto life eternal, multiply in us the fruit of the mysterious paschal sacrament, and pour the strengthening power of this saving food into our souls.
