Commentary for this day

CollectSep 8, 2026

8 September – Feast of the Nativity of Mary and a “flash of anamnesis”

Fámulis tuis, quaesumus, Dómine, cœléstis grátiæ munus impertíre: ut, quibus beátæ Vírginis partus éxstitit salútis exórdium; Nativitátis eius votíva sollémnitas pacis tríbuat increméntum.

The Nativity of Mary, which we celebrate on 8 September is older than the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, which was precisely nine months ago. Stop for a moment. Consider what our eternal prospects were before the birth not only of Our Lord, but also before the birth of His Mother, from whom He took our human nature, the Blessed…

WDTPRS – 16th Sunday after Pentecost: Grace before us, grace behind us

WDTPRS – 23rd Ordinary Sunday: Submission, manumission, filiation

Deus, per quem nobis et redemptio venit et praestatur adoptio, filios dilectionis tuae benignus intende, ut in Christo credentibus et vera tribuatur libertas, et hereditas aeterna.
Literal rendering

O God, through whom to us come both redemption and adoption is guaranteed, kindly give attention to your beloved children, so that both true freedom and the inheritance everlasting may be bestowed on those believing in Christ.

The Collect for the 23rd Ordinary Sunday – this Sunday – was not in any pre-Conciliar edition of the Roman Missal, but it was in the 8th century Gelasian Sacramentary in a section for evening prayers during Paschaltide. You have to wonder how they – the cutting and pasting experts – made these decisions.

23rd Sunday of Ordinary Time: POST COMMUNION (1)

What Does The Prayer Really Say? 23rd Sunday Of Ordinary Time ORIGINALLY PRINTED IN The Wanderer in 2003 I made comments about the ungrammatical ICEL rendering of “all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father.” This incited various notes from readers, including that from Fr. PN via e-mail: “In reference to your recent column (August 21) you criticize the translation…
