DIEBUS SALTEM DOMINICIS – 22nd Sunday after Pentecost

A while ago, I ran into a claim that in the near future devotion to the Holy Face of Jesus would be more and more important. Think about how our ecclesial shepherds have, through neglect and even expressions of contempt, downplayed and eroded the pious devotional practices of the faithful. Hence, I am inclined to think that any good, traditional…

Collect for the Commemoration of Bl. John Paul II

Deus, dives in misericordia, [As I suspected] qui beatum Ioannem Paulum, papam, universae Ecclesiae tuae praeesse voluisti, [ditto] praesta, quaesumus, ut, eius institutis edocti, [hmmm… ] corda nostra salutiferae gratiae Christi, [perhaps better gratiae Christi salutiferae] unius redemptoris hominis, fidenter aperiamus. [As I suspected, on both counts.]

When a person is beatified their “cult” or the public liturgical observance of the person is normally restricted to the place most closely associated with the blessed’s life and work or the blessed’s religious institute, if a member. The liturgical cult of Bl. Pope John Paul II will be observed in Rome and in Poland. Bishops would have to seek…

From 29th Sunday of Ordinary Time

On weekdays without their own proper, the Mass takes the Sunday’s prayers.

CollectOct 19, 2024

Omnipotens sempiterne Deus, fac nos tibi semper et devotam gerere voluntatem, et maiestati tuae sincero corde servire.
Literal rendering

Almighty eternal God, cause us always both to bear towards You a devout faith, and to serve Your majesty with a sincere heart.

A little rant, before launching into this comment on a prayer for Mass, which called to mind a beautiful piece of art with a special theme. At the “Walking Together about Walking Togetherity” and in papal audiences there is increasing support – at least by inuendo – of same-sex couples, which is effectively a betrayal of God who made man…

29th Sunday of Ordinary Time: POST COMMUNION (1)

Fac nos, quaesumus, Domine, caelestium rerum frequentatione proficere, ut et temporibus beneficiis adiuvemur, et erudiamur aeternis.
Literal rendering

We beseech thee, O Lord, make us to make progress by a frequent use of heavenly things, so that we may both be sustained with temporal beneficial helps, and also be polished by the eternal.

What Does the Prayer Really Say? 29th Sunday of Ordinary Time ORIGINALLY PRINTED IN The Wanderer in 2003 You might recall reading about the rather recently established “permission” for priests holding the relevant documents (“celebrets”) issued by the Holy See to use the 1962 Missale Romanum in the Basilica of St. Peter in Rome. The present Archpriest of the Basilica…
