WDTPRS – 1 January – Octave of Christmas (1962MR)

Deus, qui salutis aeternae, beatae Mariae virginitate fecunda, humano generi praemia praestitisti: tribue, quaesumus; ut ipsam pro nobis intercedere sentiamus, per quam meruimus auctorem vitae suscipere.
Literal rendering

O God, who by the fruitful virginity of Blessed Mary bestowed upon the human race the rewards of eternal salvation, grant, we beg, that we may perceive her interceding for us, through whom we merited to receive Your Son, the author of life. As I said before, the Circumcision resounds deeply throughout this Mass. The Roman Station for today is the ancient basilica dedicated to Mary, S. Maria in Trastevere. However, our knowledge of history reminds us that the Station used to be in even more ancient times the basilica S. Maria ad martyres, the other name of the Pantheon in the heart of Rome. The “rewards of eternal salvation” were won only through the shedding of the Son of…

What Does the Prayer Really Say? 1 January – The Octave of Christmas (1962 Missale Romanum) During the Octave of the Nativity Holy Church helps us to rest in the mystery of the Lord’s Birth, His future Sacrifice, and the Divine Motherhood of Mary. Our Church is the greatest expert in humanity there has ever been. Octaves reflect her care…

WDTPRS – Holy Family (1962MR): Extend your family bond around someone who has no one else

Domine Iesu Christe, qui Mariae et Ioseph subditus, domesticam vitam ineffabilibus virtutibus consecrasti: fac nos, utriusque auxilio, Familiae sanctae tuae exemplis instrui; et consortium consequi sempiternum.
Literal rendering

O Lord Jesus Christ, who, while subject to Mary and Joseph, consecrated domestic life by unutterable virtues, cause us, by the help of them both, to be instructed in the examples of Your Holy Family, and to attain eternal fellowship.

One of my favorite paintings. It is by Murillo and it hangs in the National Gallery in London. It is “The Heavenly and Earthly Trinities“. I have a large, high definition print, beautifully framed, in the “Two Trinities” chapel over the altar. I will be forever grateful to the readers (esp. JD and AW) who donated so that I could…

WDTPRS – Sunday 31 Dec – Holy Family: We must pray that God be appeased.

Hostiam tibi placationis offerimus, Domine, suppliciter deprecantes, ut, Deiparae virginis beatique Ioseph interveniente suffragio, familias nostras in tua gratia firmiter et pace constituas.

Sunday in the Octave of Christmas, in the Novus Ordo calendar, is the Feast of the Holy Family. In the traditional calendar, the Feast of the Holy Family will be celebrated on Sunday, 7 January. Our liturgical, seasonal context is Octave of the Nativity of the Lord. An “octave” is a period of eight days when liturgical time is suspended…

WDTPRS: Holy Family – children first learn who God is by knowing their parents

Deus, qui praeclara nobis sanctae Familiae dignatus es exempla praebere, concede propitius, ut domesticis virtutibus caritatisque vinculis illam sectantes, in laetitia domus tuae praemiis fruamur aeternis.
Literal rendering

O God, who deigned to provide us with the very beautiful models of the Holy Family, grant propitiously that we who are eagerly imitating them in domestic virtues and the bonds of charity, may enjoy eternal rewards in the joy of Your house.

This coming Sunday in the post-Conciliar, Novus Ordo, Ordinary Form calendar, is the Feast of the Holy Family. In the traditional Roman calendar, Holy Family will be on 11 January. The place God Incarnate chose to begin manifesting His sacrificial love, which reached its culmination on the Cross, was the family home.

Holy Family – Sunday in the Octave of Christmas: POST COMMUNION (2)

Literal rendering

Most merciful Father, cause those whom You restore by the heavenly sacraments to imitate the model of the Holy Family without ceasing, so that, after the hardships of this world, we may attain its eternal fellowship. We could say “their” rather than “its” for the Holy Family, but I am sticking to the singular for the family “unit”.
