Custodi, Domine, quaesumus, Ecclesiam tuam propitiatione perpetua, et quia sine te labitur humana mortalitas, tuis semper auxiliis et abstrahatur a noxis, et ad salutaria dirigatur.Guard your Church, O Lord, we beseech You, with perpetual favor, and since without You our mortal flesh slides toward ruin by means of your helping remedies let it be pulled back from injuries and be guided unto saving healths. There are different ways to do this, but I wanted to place in evidence the image of health and the flesh and medicine.
COLLECT (2002MR): Custodi, Domine, quaesumus, Ecclesiam tuam propitiatione perpetua, et quia sine te labitur humana mortalitas, tuis semper auxiliis et abstrahatur a noxis, et ad salutaria dirigatur. Propitiatio in its fundamental meaning meanings and “an appeasing, atonement, propitiation”. The dictionary of liturgical Latin Blaise also gives us a view of the word as “favor”. This makes sense. God has been…

Sacrae, nobis, quaesumus, Domine, mensae refectio, et piae conversationis augmentum, et tuae propitiationis continuum praestet auxilium.Let the refreshing of the sacred table be for us, O Lord, we beseech You, both an increase of our dutiful manner of life, and the continual/speedy help of Your propitious favor.
We continue our project of looking at the Post communions of Lent: Tuesday – 2nd Week of Lent You find this is the 8th c. L.Sac. Engolismensis: Sacrae nobis quaesumus Domine mensae libatio et piae conuersationis augmentum et tuae propitiationis continuum praestet auxilium. We saw once before that the snipper-pasters of Bugnini’s Consilium changed the more ancient libatio to refectio.…

Deus, qui nobis dilectum Filium tuum audire praecepisti, verbo tuo interius nos pascere digneris, ut, spiritali purificato intuitu, gloriae tuae laetemur aspectu.O God, who commanded us to listen to Your beloved Son, deign to nourish us interiorly with Your word, so that, once (our) spiritual view has been purified, we may rejoice in the sight of Your glory.
Here is the Collect of the 2nd Sunday of Lent, a new composition for the Novus Ordo based on a precedent in the Liber Mozarabicus Sacramentorum: Used by early Latin writers such as Sts. Hilary of Poitiers (+c 368), Ambrose (+397) and in liturgical texts, gloria is more than fame or splendor of appearance. Our Latin liturgical gloria is the…

Bless Your faithful, O Lord, with an everlasting benediction and make them so to cling to the Gospel of Your Only-Begotten that they may be able to long for always and happily to attain unto that glory whose beauty He showed to the Apostles in Himself. This wonderful plea for your sake on the part of the priest, which I hope you might hear someday with your heads bowed unto God, connects us back to the moment of the Transfiguration about which we were instructed in the Gospel for today’s Holy Mass.
In the 2002 edition of the Missale Romanum the traditional Lenten “Prayer over the people” has been revived. It can be used now in Latin. ORATIO SUPER POPULUM: Benedic, Domine fideles tuos benedictione perpetua, et fac eos Unigeniti tui Evangelio sic adhaerere, ut ad illam gloriam, cuius in se speciem Apostolis ostendit, et suspirare iugiter et feliciter valeant pervenire. The…

Humans are not angels. We have both body and soul. The bond between body and soul is so great that when the one is separated from the other we die. But so powerful is that bond that our soul awaits the moment when it will once again (using philosophical language) inform matter which is our body. We will arise from the dust from which we were formed. Some will rise to the unending happiness of heaven, some to perpetual damnation of hell. Our eternal destiny is determined by our state of soul at…

What Does the Prayer Really Say? Second Sunday of Lent – Station: St Mary in Domnica alla Navicella ORIGINALLY PRINTED IN The Wanderer in 2002 At the time of this writing the Winter Olympics are in full swing. The schizophrenic but nevertheless spectacular opening night ceremonies included a new “theme” (why do they need a theme?) by the composer John…
