Later today, I will participate in the Good Friday service in the Extraordinary Form. Thank you, Holy Father for Summorum Pontificum. During the Good Friday service, there are many intercessory prayers. One of them is for the Jews. Over the decades, the Good Friday prayer for the Jews has stirred controversy in diverse quarters. Benedict XVI changed the text of…

WDTPRS Good Friday: cruor… streaming gore

Reminiscere miserationum tuarum, Domine, et famulos tuos aeterna protectione sanctifica, pro quibus Christus, Filius tuus, per suum cruorem instituit paschale mysterium.
Literal rendering

Remember Your mercies, O Lord, and with your eternal protection sanctify Your servants, for whom Christ, Your Son, established the paschal mystery by means of His streaming Blood.

Cruor has a precise meaning: “Blood (which flows from a wound), a stream of blood (more restricted in meaning than sanguis, which designates both that circulating in bodies and that shed by wounding). ORATIO: Reminiscere miserationum tuarum, Domine, et famulos tuos aeterna protectione sanctifica, pro quibus Christus, Filius tuus, per suum cruorem instituit paschale mysterium. WDTPRS – Palm Sunday: transforming example

Literal rendering

Almighty eternal God, who, for the human race, made our Savior both assume flesh and undergo the Cross for an example of humility to be imitated, graciously grant, that we may be worthy both to grasp both the lessons of His forbearance and also to have shares in the resurrection.

Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week. The Sacred Triduum (triduum from tres dies – “three day space”) were once days of obligation when people were freed from servile work so that they could attend the liturgies, once celebrated in the morning. In the 17th century, however, the obligation was removed under the influence of changing social and religious…

Palm Sunday: POST COMMUNION)

Sacro munere satiati, supplices te, Domine, deprecamur, ut, qui fecisti nos morte Filii tui sperare quod credimus, facias nos, eodem resurgente, pervenire quo tendimus.
Literal rendering

Filled to satiety by the sacred gift, we humble ones entreat you, Lord, that you, who made us in the death of your Son to hope for what we believe, will make us, the same Son arising, to reach the place toward which we are striving.
