CollectSep 3, 2023

WDTPRS – 14th Sunday after Pentecost: the finger

Custodi, Domine, quaesumus, Ecclesiam tuam propitiatione perpetua: et quia sine te labitur humana mortalitas; tuis semper auxiliis et abstrahatur a noxiis, et ad salutaria dirigatur.
Literal rendering

Guard your Church, we beseech You, O Lord, with perpetual favor, and since without You our mortal flesh slides toward ruin by means of your helping remedies let it be pulled back from injuries and be guided unto saving healths.

This Sunday’s Collect for the Extraordinary Form survived the snipping and pasting of the Consilium and the late Annibale Bugnini’s liturgical experts to be used in the Ordinary Form on Tuesday of the 2nd week of Lent. Figure that one out. Propitiatio, in its fundamental meaning, is “an appeasing, atonement, propitiation”. The dictionary of liturgical Latin Blaise/Dumas also gives us…

Our Lady of Sorrows

Commentary for this day

CollectFeb 28, 2006

28 (27) Feb: St. Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows

Literal rendering

O God, who taught blessed Gabriel to reflect constantly upon the sorrows of Your most sweet Mother, and through her raised him on high by the glory of holiness and miracles: grant us, by his intercession and example; so to be joined to the tears of Your Mother, that we may be saved by her maternal protection.

Yesterday was the feast of St. Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows according to the calendar of the Novus Ordo, however, in the older, so-called "Tridentine" Missal we find that either 27 or 28 February was given to him. His date is most properly 27 February since that is the day he died and was born into heaven in 1862.…

From 23rd Sunday of Ordinary Time

On weekdays without their own proper, the Mass takes the Sunday’s prayers.

CollectSep 4, 2022

WDTPRS – 23rd Ordinary Sunday: Submission, manumission, filiation

Deus, per quem nobis et redemptio venit et praestatur adoptio, filios dilectionis tuae benignus intende, ut in Christo credentibus et vera tribuatur libertas, et hereditas aeterna.
Literal rendering

O God, through whom to us come both redemption and adoption is guaranteed, kindly give attention to your beloved children, so that both true freedom and the inheritance everlasting may be bestowed on those believing in Christ.

The Collect for the 23rd Ordinary Sunday – this Sunday – was not in any pre-Conciliar edition of the Roman Missal, but it was in the 8th century Gelasian Sacramentary in a section for evening prayers during Paschaltide. You have to wonder how they – the cutting and pasting experts – made these decisions.

23rd Sunday of Ordinary Time: POST COMMUNION (1)

What Does The Prayer Really Say? 23rd Sunday Of Ordinary Time ORIGINALLY PRINTED IN The Wanderer in 2003 I made comments about the ungrammatical ICEL rendering of “all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father.” This incited various notes from readers, including that from Fr. PN via e-mail: “In reference to your recent column (August 21) you criticize the translation…
