WDTPRS – 18 November: Dedication of the Basilicas of St. Peter and of St. Paul

Deus, qui beati Petri Apostoli dignitatem praecipue in nostra sacrosancta basilica facis esse gloriosam, praesta, quaesumus, ut et doctrina semper ipsius foveamur et meritis.
Literal rendering

O God, who are now making glorious the dignity of the the blessed Apostle Peter, especially in our most holy basilica, grant, we beseech You, that we may be supported both by his teaching and by his merits.

An old photo for this blog, but a good one. Shot from my old apartment. In the traditional calendar, it is the Feast of the Dedication of the Basilicas of St. Peter, in the Vatican, in 1626 and St. Paul, on the Via Ostiense, in 1854.

WDTPRS – 23rd Sunday after Pentecost: SNIP!

Absolve, quaesumus, Domine, tuorum delicta populorum, ut a peccatorum nexibus, quae pro nostra fragilitate contraximus, tua benignitate liberemur.
Literal rendering

Unloose, O Lord, we implore, the transgressions of Your peoples, so that in Your kindness we may be freed from the bonds of the sins which we committed on account of our weakness.

During his Sunday Angelus address today, 12 Nov, the Pope asked the sort of question that Popes ought to ask, especially at this time of the liturgical year, when we focus more and more on the Four Last Things and the End of the World: “One day will be the last. If it was today, am I prepared?”

WDTPRS – 32nd Ordinary Sunday: Your mission as a Christian

Omnipotens et misericors Deus, universa nobis adversantia propitiatus exclude, ut, mente et corpore pariter expediti, quae tua sunt liberis mentibus exsequamur.
Literal rendering

Almighty and merciful God, having been appeased, keep away from us all things opposing us, so that, having been unencumbered in mind and body equally, we may with free minds accomplish the things which you will.

Let’s look at the Collect for the 32nd Ordinary Sunday, keeping in mind that Monday, 11 Nov 2019 is Armistice or Veterans Day, also called Remembrance Day. DONATE to the Archdiocese for Military Services! Sunday’s Collect has an antecedent in the Gelasian Sacramentary, is also used in the Extraordinary Form on the 19th Sunday after Pentecost.

32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time: POST COMMUNION (1)

Gratias tibi, Domine, referimus sacro munere vegetati, tuam clementiam implorantes, ut, per infusionem Spiritus tui, in quibus caelestis virtus introivit, sinceritatis gratia perseveret.
Literal rendering

Having been enlivened by the sacred gift, we return thanks to you, O Lord, imploring your forbearance, so that, through the outpouring of your Spirit, the grace of sincerity may persevere in those whom heavenly power has entered into. It is not a surprise to find the word sinceritatis in a Post communion prayer because it instantly calls to mind the Biblical phrase azymis sinceritatis, referring to the unleavened bread of the Jews and the admonition to live a moral life in keeping with one’s Christian character. At the time of Holy Communion we partake of what was the unleavened bread of the host, now transformed by the consecration of the priest into the Body and Blood of Christ. Sinceritas,…
