Prayers for a new bishop and WDTPRS: Collect – St. Ambrose

Deus, qui beatum Ambrosium episcopum catholicae fidei doctorem et apostolicae fortitudinis exemplum effecisti, excita in Ecclesia tua viros secundum cor tuum, qui eam fortiter et sapienter gubernent.
Literal rendering

O God, who made blessed bishop Ambrose to be a teacher of Catholic Faith and an example of apostolic fortitude, rouse up in your Church men after Your own Heart, that they may govern her wisely and bravely.

On Friday 11 Dec. in St. Paul, Minnesota, my native place, the Archdiocese is formally saying goodbye to one of its sons, now Bishop-Elect Paul Sirba, who will be consecrated as the new Bishop on Duluth on 14 December. As I think about the great good fortune of the Diocese of Duluth, I have in mind also the Collect of…

WDTPRS: Post Communion – Thursday – 1st Week of Advent

EM (2002MR): Prosint nobis, quaesumus, Domine, frequentata mysteria, quibus nos, inter praetereuntia ambulantes, iam nunc instituis amare caelestia et inhaerere mansuris.
Literal rendering

We beg You, O Lord, may they be profitable for us, these oft celebrated sacramental mysteries, by which You established that we, walking amidst the things that are passing away, would now in this very moment love heavenly things and cleave to the things that will endure.

We continue our march through the prayers of Holy Mass in different seasons, now the season of Advent. We are looking now at the Post Communions in the Novus Ordo. The context of the Post Communion in the Mass is similar to those of the Collect and Super Oblata.

Thursday in the 1st Week of Advent

Excita, Domine, potentiam tuam, et magna nobis virtute succurre, ut, quod nostra peccata praepediunt, gratia tuae propitiationis acceleret.
Literal rendering

Rouse up Your power, O Lord, and hasten to aid us with your great might, so that, what our sins are hindering the grace of Your merciful favor may make swift.

Here is the Collect for Thursday of the 1st week of Advent. COLLECT: Excita, Domine, potentiam tuam, et magna nobis virtute succurre, ut, quod nostra peccata praepediunt, gratia tuae propitiationis acceleret. This prayer was in the ancient Gelasian Sacramentary and other sacramentaries. It was in the 1962MR as well for the 4th Sunday of Advent ("Rorate").

WDTPRS: 1st Sunday of Advent: Prayer over the Offerings

Placare, Domine, quaesumus, nostrae precibus humilitatis et hostiis, et, ubi nulla suppetunt suffragia meritorum tuae nobis indulgentiae succurre praesidiis.
Literal rendering

Be appeased, O Lord, we beseech You, by the prayers of our humility and by our sacrificial offerings, and, where no favorable points of merits suffice for us, succor us by the helps of Your indulgence.

The Lord’s Coming is a fearful thing to ponder. The First Coming of the Lord, prophesied by Jeremiah in Sunday’s 1st Reading, and His Sacrifice renewed daily on our altars, mean that His Second Coming, described by the Lord in the Gospel reading from Luke 21, and our impending judgment need not raze the thoughtful soul in abject terror. During…

WDTPRS – 1st Sunday of Advent – SUPER OBLATA (2002MR): thresholds

Suscipe, quaesumus, Domine, munera quae de tuis offerimus collata beneficiis, et, quod nostrae devotioni concedis effici temporali, tuae nobis fiat praemium redemptionis aeternae.
Literal rendering

Take up, O Lord, we beg You, the gifts we are offering which were gathered together from Your favors, and let that which You grant to be accomplished by our temporal dedication become for us the reward of Your eternal redemption.

Today’s Ordinary Form Super Oblata prayer, the prayer over the offerings during the Offertory, is found in the ancient Veronese Sacramentary amidst prayers for the month of July. Note the scrambling of word order for rhetorical effect. Words that go together are separated and concepts are embedded between them. This elegant rhetorical interlocking delights both ear and mind. It also…

Da, quaesumus, omnipotens Deus, hanc tuis fidelibus voluntatem, ut, Christo tuo venienti iustis operibus occurrentes, eius dextrae sociati, regnum mereantur possidere caeleste. Per Dominum….
Literal rendering

Almighty God, we beseech You, grant to Your faithful this disposition of will, that those rushing with just works to meet Your Christ, now coming, united at His right hand may merit to possess the heavenly kingdom. This is the first prayer of the liturgical year. We are readying ourselves for Christ who comes! This Sunday is back to back with the Solemnity of Christ the King, honoring the future Second Coming at the end of the world, while it prepares us for celebrating His First Coming at Christmas. Advent is all about how the Lord comes… in every way. He comes in actual graces. He comes when the priest says, “Hoc est enim corpus meum….This is my Body.” He…
