Festina quaesumus, Domine, ne tardaveris, et auxilium nobis supernae virtutis impende; ut adventus tui consolationibus subleventur, qui in tua pietate confidunt.
Literal rendering

Hurry, we beseech You, O Lord, tarry not, and expend upon us the help of heavenly power; that those who rely upon Your mercy may be sustained by the consolations of Your Coming.

Today, Ember Wednesday of Advent, those who have the use of the older, traditional Roman Missal, offer worship to God with the so-called Missa aurea, the “Golden Mass”. There is a strong Marian overtone to today’s Mass formulary. The Roman Station for today is St. Mary Major. the Gospel is the Annunciation.

WDTPRS: Last Days of Advent: 20 December – “ineffable Word”

Deus, aeterna maiestas, cuius ineffabile Verbum, Angelo nuntiante, Virgo immaculata suscepit, et, domus divinitatis effecta, Santi Spiritus luce repletur, quaesumus, ut nos, eius exemplo, voluntati tuae humiliter adhaerere valeamus.
Literal rendering

O God, eternal majesty, whose ineffable Word, received by the Immaculate Virgin as the angel was announcing, and, having been made the house of divinity, was filled with the light of the Holy Spirit, we implore, that we, by her example, may be able to cleave humbly to Your will.

Today’s Collect, as we move solemnly through the last days of Advent, once again underscores the dimension of the mystery of the approach Feast more than it emphasizes the penitential spirit we adopt during this season. As with the other Collects in this period, this prayer is based on a text from the Rotulus of Ravenna, which is published with…

WDTPRS: Wednesday of the 3rd Week of Advent

Praesta, quaesumus, omnipotens Deus, ut Filii tui ventura sollemnitas et praesentis nobis vitae remedia largiatur, et praemia aeterna concedat.
Literal rendering

Almighty God, grant, we beseech You, that the upcoming solemn feast of Your Son, both may lavish upon us remedies for this present life, and also concede to us eternal rewards.

Here is the Collect for Wednesday of the 3rd Week of Advent. This prayer was in Rotulus 6 published with the Veronese Sacramentary. It was in the Gelasian Sacramentary. It is interesting that this is more or less the Collect that is in the 1962MR, though changed. I add some emphasis.

WDTPRS – “Gaudete” 3rd Sunday of Advent: All the orations!

Aurem tuam, quaesumus, Domine, precibus nostris accommoda: et mentis nostrae tenebras, gratia tuae visitationis illustra.
Literal rendering

O Lord, lend your ear to our prayers, we beseech you, and by the grace of your visitation, illuminate the shadows of our mind.

This Sunday’s nickname, “Gaudete” means “Rejoice!” Gaudete, an imperative of gaudeo and the first word of the Introit chant, sets the theme in the Novus Ordo and the older, Traditional Mass: joy. Advent is not strictly a penitential season the way Lent is. Since Advent is about Lord’s Second Coming, not just His joyful First at Bethlehem, we also prepare…

Literal rendering

O God, who attentively watch Your people look forward faithfully to the feast of the Lord’s birth, grant, we entreat, that we may be able to attain the to joys of so great a salvation and celebrate them with eager jubilation in solemn annual festive rites.

Our rose set for Sung Masses on Gaudete and Laetare when we have an Asperges. DONATE We are coming to the 3rd Sunday of Advent, also nicknamed Gaudete…. the plural imperative of gaudeo, “Rejoice!”, the first word of the Introit chant. 3rd Sunday of Advent: SUPER OBLATA (2)

Devotionis nostrae tibi, Domine, quaesumus, hostia iugiter immoletur, quae et sacri peragat instituta mysterii, et salutare tuum nobis potenter operetur.
Literal rendering

We now beg, O Lord, let there be offered up to You continuously the sacrificial victim of our devotion, which may both carry through the actions of the sacred mystery that was instituted, and mightily effect for us Your salvation. ICEL (1973 translation of the 1970MR): Lord, may the gift we offer in faith and love be a continual sacrifice in your honor and truly become our eucharist and our salvation. I guess, you can’t object to what the ICEL prayer says all in all, except for the fact that it doesn’t translate what the Latin really says. Notice that ICEL made Latin devotio, that single-minded dedication, into “faith and love.” They ought to have simply said “devotion”, but that…
