WDTPRS – 21 December – O Oriens: “O dawn of the East”

O Oriens, splendor lucis aeternae, et sol iustitiae: veni, et illumina sedentes in tenebris et umbra mortis.

We continue our look at the O Antiphons. ENGLISH: O dawn of the east, brightness of light eternal, and sun of justice: come, and enlighten those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death. The shedding of light frees us from darkness. Again, the subtle note of liberation, deliverance.

WDTPRS: Last Days of Advent: 21 December – “majesty which transforms us”

Preces populi tui, quaesumus, Domine, clementer exaudi, ut, qui de Unigeniti tui in nostra carne adventu laetantur, cum venerit in sua maiestate, aeternae vitae praemium consequantur.
Literal rendering

Graciously hear the prayers of Your people, we beseech You, O Lord, so that those who are rejoicing about the Coming of Your Only-Begotten in our flesh, may attain the reward of eternal life when He will have come in His majesty.

Here is the Collect for 21 December. Remember, that in the Novus Ordo, the Last Days of Advent, from 17-24 December, shift in focus in the Collects to images of light and glory, moving the listener to attend to the great mystery about to be celebrated. The prayers are in substance from the ancient Rotulus of Ravenna.

WDTPRS – “Gaudete” 3rd Sunday of Advent: All the orations!

Aurem tuam, quaesumus, Domine, precibus nostris accommoda: et mentis nostrae tenebras, gratia tuae visitationis illustra.
Literal rendering

O Lord, lend your ear to our prayers, we beseech you, and by the grace of your visitation, illuminate the shadows of our mind.

This Sunday’s nickname, “Gaudete” means “Rejoice!” Gaudete, an imperative of gaudeo and the first word of the Introit chant, sets the theme in the Novus Ordo and the older, Traditional Mass: joy. Advent is not strictly a penitential season the way Lent is. Since Advent is about Lord’s Second Coming, not just His joyful First at Bethlehem, we also prepare…

WDTPRS – 3rd Sunday of Advent: The childlike dash

Deus, qui conspicis populum tuum nativitatis dominicae festivitatem fideliter exspectare, praesta, quaesumus, ut valeamus ad tantae salutis gaudia pervenire, et ea votis sollemnibus alacri laetitia celebrare.
Literal rendering

O God, who attentively watch Your people look forward faithfully to the feast of the Lord’s birth, grant, we entreat, that we may be able to attain the to joys of so great a salvation and celebrate them with eager jubilation in solemn annual festive rites.

Our rose set for Sung Masses on Gaudete and Laetare when we have an Asperges. DONATE We are coming to the 3rd Sunday of Advent, also nicknamed Gaudete…. the plural imperative of gaudeo, “Rejoice!”, the first word of the Introit chant. This Sunday there is a relaxation of the penitential aspect of Advent, just Laetare Sunday does during Lent.

WDTPRS on the 3rd Sunday of Advent

Tuam, Domine, clementiam imploramus, ut haec divina subsidia, a vitiis expiatos, ad festa ventura nos praeparent.

O God, who attentively does watch Your people look forward faithfully to the feast of the Lord’s birth, grant, we entreat, that we may be able to attain to the joys of so great a salvation and celebrate them with eager jubilation in solemn festive rites. ANOTHER VERSION: O God, who look upon your people awaiting in faith the feast of the Lord’s birth, strengthen us, we pray, to reach the joys of so great a salvation, and to celebrate them always with solemn worship and glad rejoicing. 3rd Sunday of Advent: SUPER OBLATA (2)

Devotionis nostrae tibi, Domine, quaesumus, hostia iugiter immoletur, quae et sacri peragat instituta mysterii, et salutare tuum nobis potenter operetur.
Literal rendering

We now beg, O Lord, let there be offered up to You continuously the sacrificial victim of our devotion, which may both carry through the actions of the sacred mystery that was instituted, and mightily effect for us Your salvation. ICEL (1973 translation of the 1970MR): Lord, may the gift we offer in faith and love be a continual sacrifice in your honor and truly become our eucharist and our salvation. I guess, you can’t object to what the ICEL prayer says all in all, except for the fact that it doesn’t translate what the Latin really says. Notice that ICEL made Latin devotio, that single-minded dedication, into “faith and love.” They ought to have simply said “devotion”, but that…
